In the late 90s, the music genre we know it as “Bongo Fleva” was at the peak. Different kind of peak because music is a living thing. It goes through stages. Ups and downs. Creativity was at all time high. Producers like MJ, P-Funk Majani, Enriko and Mika Mwamba were competing (in a good way) to not only establish themselves in the game but also to dominate.
There were few studios. It wasn’t as easy as it is today for anyone to go into a studio and record. Times have changed. You needed talent. Something unique was your ticket into the booth.
It was around that era when a relatively unknown Saida Karoli emerged. She was a sweet surprise. By that time, FM Studios owned by business person Felix Muta (thus FM) had one of the most talented producers, Mika Mwamba. He had done it all. Choirs, Bongo Dance, Taarab, etc.
Within a short time, the work between these Mika Mwamba and unknown Saida Karoli became “the talk of the town.” The mix of flevas between traditional vibes from northern Tanzania produced magic. It worked. Saida Karoli became a superstar. I remember one time when I was in Uganda; she performed at a full packed Nakivubo Stadium to the surprise of even President Museveni.
Long story short; unfortunately Saida Karoli didn’t last long. Just as she came into the scene with a bang, her exit was almost similar. Last time I heard, she was back to her village, married and very house wife.
Years later, it’s great to see Diamond Platinumz who is without a doubt a current reigning ambassador of Bongo Fleva, coming out with a perfect rendition and mix of Salome which as you may have sensed from above, was originally done by Saida Karoli. Diamond collaborated with RayNavvy who is among artists forming his organic label, Wasafi Classic.
